Hello! Nice to meet you.
Dawn's next exhibition is at The Other Art Fair, The Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London. March 6th-9th March. Please come and say Hi!
Dawn morphs vintage engravings with digital graphics and photographs to illustrate her interpretation of the world around us. She sources these from many different places, including old engraving books she has accumulated over the years to lucky finds from the charity shop. Dawn gets the artwork printed onto canvas and then works into them with acrylic paint, different mediums, glitter, ink, whatever she thinks will work to give her the looks she’s after.
She sifts through 100’s of photographs from stock resources to find the right model and other elements for her artwork, The characters she chooses to use are ones that she feels drawn to, they exude a really cool attitude, like someone you’d love to meet down the pub. Dawn loves taking all these found images from one context and completely changing them and creating her own world.
She hopes the work will inspire the viewer to look and look again by building narrative through layers and encourages them to gain a different perspective each time. The use of strong characters and compact surreal landscapes populate Dawn’s artwork alongside vivid colour palettes to obscure the work’s hidden meanings. Dawn generally starts with the characters and has a rough idea of direction, but on most occasions it develops fluidly. Her most recent work has been inspired by portraiture and the Renaissance period. Dawn got married last year and wanted to use the portraits as the voyeurs and additional guests at the wedding!
